Senior Rugby Squad enjoy successful Training Weekend in Kerry

The PBC Senior Rugby squad travelled to Banna Beach in Kerry this past weekend for a successful training and team building exercise. 40 players and their coaches went on the trip, with highlights being the beach soccer and Teachers vs Pupils Beach Volleyball games, followed by the obligatory dip into a freezing cold Atlantic Ocean !!

The group also took in the Champions Cup match between Munster and the Ospreys on TV on Saturday evening. Big thanks are due to SCT Head Coach Ger Burke, who organised the trip and to his fellow coaches, Mr Lehane, Mr O’Regan and Mr Buckley for their help over the weekend.

Munster Hurling Final

Well done to our under 16 ½ Hurling team who competed in the Munster Hurling B Final on Wednesday 13th November 2019 in Ballyagran, Limerick.

PBC came up against a strong team from St. Joseph’s, Tulla, Co Clare and Tulla fully deserved their win.

Our championship campaign began with a 2nd round win over Abbey CBS from Tipperary town.

The quarter final was against John The Baptist College from Hospital, Limerick.

Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk were our opponents in the semi-final.

I.S.T.A. Senior Science Quiz at UCC

Last night Thursday 14th November in UCC we had 3 teams participating in the Senior Science Quiz among 38 teams from Cork County & City.

One of our teams came joint first: Chris Fehilly, Jack Heffernan & Liam Rooke, they will go to TCD on November 23rd to participate in the National final. Another team was pipped to the post at a tie break for 5th place. All of our boys did us proud on the night

Pres remain unbeaten in Senior Cup after victory over Ard Scoil Rís

Pres were full value for their 21-8 victory over Ard Scoil Rís in the group stages of the Senior Schools Cup, played in wet and windy conditions in Limerick yesterday.

Both sides struggled to cope with the elements early on, but Pres took the lead after 18 minutes when Liam Ormond scored to the right of the posts, with Adam O’Brien adding the extras. Ard Scoil’s only points of the opening half came as Cian Casey kicked a penalty following a Pres high tackle, ASR 3-7 PBC.

PBC became far more dominant in the physical exchanges before the half-time break and were rewarded for a concerted period of pressure when PBC captain, Alex Kendellen, powered over close to the posts after a great line break by centre, Peter Hyland. Adam O’Brien had an easy task with the subsequent conversion, leaving the half time score, ASR 3-14 Pres.

After the interval, Pres again dominated possession but had to wait until midway through the half to add to their lead as Peter Hyland found space and crossed for a fine try, again converted by Adam O’Brien. ASR mounted a resurgence in the final stages and grabbed a try of their own following a mazy run from centre, David Smith who set up impressive ASR No. 8, Jack Ward Murphy, for a fine score.

Pres’ next outing in the competition will come in two weeks time, a home fixture in Wilton against Bandon Grammar.

Genetics Lecture for 5th & 6th Years

Dr.John Williams is a past pupil of Pres (2003), his inspirational Lecture was at a level all students could understand. It touched on the recent advances that genetics has made into the editing of the human genome, citing 2018 in China where twins born by IVF were edited without their parents knowledge for resistance to HIV.

This sparked questions, many of which were in the area of Bioethics & the questioning of where society wants to go with this research in terms of allowing designer babies or eugenics?

Pres past pupil, Sean Jenkins, will make his long awaited first appearance for NCAA Division 1 basketball programme, Presbyterian College of South Carolina, in their season opener vs ACC powerhouse, Clemson University, this coming Thursday, November 7. His progress this season will be monitored closely by his many friends in Pres.

SciFest STEM Outreach Award

Our names are Caomhán Budhlaeir and Illann Wall. This year we have entered a project entitled 'Does Every Cloud Have A Silver Lining - An Investigation into the Acute Toxicity of e-Cigarette Use' into the SciFest and BT Young Scientist Competitions. We will be heading to the SciFest National Final in November, and for this, we have entered a video summarising our project into the SciFest STEM Outreach Award.

Study and Motivational Seminar

6th year students attended a very successful and energetic Study and Motivational Seminar in October. Ray Langan motivated our boys to ‘kick start’ their study routines and instructed them on how to create and use one page summaries to study more effectively. Feedback from students has been excellent.

Caoimhín the hero for Liverpool in penalty shootout

Former Pres student and Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher could not stop smiling after his heroics in the penalty shoot-out played a pivotal role in Liverpool's remarkable Carabao Cup win against Arsenal.

Ireland under-21 keeper, Caoimhin, paved the way to the climax of a remarkable night at Anfield as he saved Dani Ceballos' penalty in the shoot-out after a 5-5 draw in a dramatic game at Anfield.

The young Blackrock man was the toast of the Liverpool team as he helped his side into the quarter-finals and he admitted the advice from his team-mates and the Liverpool coaching staff inspired him to make the match-winning save.

"As soon as the final whistle went, all the focus was on trying to save in the shootout,” the goalkeeper told Liverpoolfc.com.

"Some of the lads and the coaches said to me, 'You've nothing to lose, just try to be the hero'. And luckily I did it in the end.

It was a bit of a whirlwind. I'm obviously happy but it's just hard to sum it up at the moment. It has all gone by quite quickly. It's just unreal, to be honest.

"We have a never-say-die attitude and we showed that once again, coming from behind on a few occasions. It just goes right through the whole squad that we'll never give up.

"It was unbelievable tonight. Once you hear fans singing You'll Never Walk Alone and you're actually playing, it's quite surreal. It's just an unreal feeling. It's class."

Caoimhin’s many supporters in Pres take understandable delight in his achievements to date and look forward to seeing his continuing development in the coming months.

John Cashman Represents Pres at the Munster Schools Athletics

John will go on to represent the school in the All Ireland championships

Congratulations to John Cashman who was delighted to represent Presentation Brothers College at the Munster Schools Athletics Combined Event Championships yesterday in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary and win first place in the Minor boys age group.

John will go on to represent the school in the All Ireland championships in Athlone Institute of Technology, Co. Westmeath on Saturday 9th November, 2019.
