Rowing Junior 18 Four & Junior 18 Pair

Congratulations to the Junior 18 Four of Rory Buckley, Emmett Ahern, Jamie Falsey, Jack Cotter and cox Gavin Keane on their win at Cork Head of the River last weekend, and another big well done to Rory and Emmett who also won the Junior 18 Pair.

PBC - Munster Schools Swimming Champions

PBC was crowned "Munster Schools Swimming Champions" yesterday in UL Arena at the Munster Senior Schools Championships.

The shield was presented to the school who won the senior 4 x 50m freestyle relay, and the performances of some of our individual events made sure that we emerged victoriously.

The boy's relay team of Peter Higgins, Neddie Irwin, Illan Wall & David Carroll beat our nearest rivals, CBC, with over 3 seconds to spare, while the senior medley relay (back, breast, fly & free) claimed silver medals in the earlier event.

Our Junior relay teams also claimed Munster medals in their respective finals. The junior teams consisting of Conor Twomey, Fiachra Wall, Jack Bugler and Louis Flynn claimed a silver medal in the medley relay and a bronze in the freestyle relay.

Neddie Irwin was crowned Munster Champion in the ‘senior’ 100m Backstroke, dipping under the minute mark in the heats and again in the finals for dominant performances on backstroke in Munster, and won silver in the 200m IM, while Paul Higgins was crowned Munster Champion in the ‘intermediate’ 100m Fly and the 100 Freestyle events - again, dominant in the 100m freestyle and finishing strongest in a very close butterfly final.

Peter Higgins won silver in the ‘senior’ finals of the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, while there were top 5 finishes for David Carroll and Illan Wall in the 100m backstroke finals.

Jude Malley made finals in the intermediate 100m breaststroke and again in the 100m freestyle, while Andrew O’Leary made strong personal best times in his 100m backstroke and 200IM events. Tom McCarthy continued the good form of PBC swimmers by swimming two personal best times in the 100m breast and 100m freestyle, and John Curtin competed in the 100m backstroke with a 1:07.4 finish.

Our young junior swimmers were happy with their individual performances with final appearances from Conor Twomey, Louis Flynn and Fiachra Wall, but they were all extremely proud to win their first PBC school relay medals on the day.

PBC have now qualified for the Irish Schools Relay finals which will be held in Castlebar in April on the same day as the Irish Schools Interpros at the same event. PBC will be well-represented at this season's interpros so we will look forward to that competition when it comes around.

AJ Whelan - Bronze Medalist European ITF Taekwondo Championships

AJ won bronze at the European ITF Taekwondo Championships in Sarajevo yesterday after beating Czech rep, Russia, Norway and narrowly loosing out to Ukraine who won the whole event after. A fantastic achievement to win this individual medal.

Pres Senior Football

On Thursday the 10th of October, the Pres Senior Football team took on Mitchelstown C.B.S in the first round of the county championship in Kildorrery gaa club. Pres were led out by captain Brian Hayes and included Cork minor Patrick Campbell.

Mitchelstown C.B.S started well with the help of a strong wind, scoring 2 early points. Pres began to work their way into the game with points from Ethan Twomey. Despite playing against a strong wind the Pres team showed their dominance with great scores coming from Darragh French and Sean Condon before Brian Hayes made a strong carry through the centre of the Mitchelstown defence where he offloaded the ball to Patrick Campbell who fired the ball into the back of the net.

The first half wasn’t all Pres as Mitchelstown broke down the defence and a simple hand pass over the full backs head gave the Mitchelstown attacker an easy chance which was finished low into the bottom corner. This was quickly followed by another goal but Pres fought back with a goal from Sam Cunningham who scored a first time finish after a stray handpass went his way. This left the half time score 2-11 to 2-03 in favour of Pres.

In the second half Pres made use of the strong wind pining Mitchelstown back in their own half and kept the score board tipping over until Mitchelstown sprung a counter attack and went for goal which was followed by a brilliant double save by Gavin Kelleher before Mitchelstown finally converted on the third attempt. This however was Mitchelstown final score of the game. Pres added another goal through Sam Cunningham before finishing off with points from Ethan Twomey and a final 45 from Brian Hayes ended the game with a final score of 3-25 to 3-3. Patrick Campbell was outstanding scoring 1-7 from play.

Pres now march on to the next round where they face the winners of Schull C.S and Colaiste Treasa Kanturk. Pres are also due to face Mitchelstown in the Munster championship where they will hope to continue this fine run of form. A great performance from all involved as they now eagerly wait for an opponent in the next round.

Michael Murphy Wins 2019 Frank Maher Classical Music Awards

Pres student Michael Murphy Wins 2019 Frank Maher Classical Music Awards

Cork cellist to use €5k prize fund to fund studies in the UK, Germany and France.

Eighteen-year-old cellist Michael Murphy, a sixth year student at Pres, has been announced as the winner of this year’s Top Security Frank Maher Classical Music Awards. The top prize is €5,000, which assists in the winning musician’s education and career.

Six finalists from Cork, Louth and Kildare competed on 4 October at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin with Phil Coulter as Master of Ceremonies. Michael performed two pieces, ‘Requiebros’ by Gaspar Cassado and the third movement from the Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 19, by Rachmaninov.

Commenting on his win, Michael said ‘It was an incredible night and I’m absolutely amazed and delighted to have won. I plan to use my prize to go towards the cost of a new bow and pay for masterclasses in the UK, Germany and France’.

The awards, which were created in 2001, aim to showcase outstanding young musical talent in Ireland and are open to sixth-year post-primary students of strings, woodwind, brass and piano. The €5,000 top prize must be used to attend a recognised place of tuition, a course of study in Ireland or abroad or on a purchase necessary for the development of their talent.

Previous winners have continued their studies in colleges and universities abroad, such as the Juilliard School, Shenandoah University of Virginia, Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique et de Danse Paris, Kronberg Academy in Germany, the Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. The 2018 winner, former Pres student, Kevin Jansson, now studying at the Juilliard School in New York, returned on the night to perform Chopin’s Ballade No. 1.

The judging panel this year were Dr Kerry Houston, head of academic studies at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, pianist Veronica McSwiney, and Brian O’Rourke, former head of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

TY Students attend DNA Workshop in UCC

The TY Biology classes were invited to a DNA Workshop in UCC on Thursday last 3rd October. The day began with a lecture on DNA & the genetic disease Sickle cell anaemia. The level of the material was high and it stretches the more well able students while Dr Sinead Kerin's style & delivery brings everyone along in an interactive and application filled morning.

The rest of the day was in the Biochemistry Laboratories working on DNA from plants & humans. The use of electrophoresis to find the Sickle cell anaemia genes & the use of techniques on the Leaving Cert Biology course as theory was wonderful.

This is a day that awakens a passion for science & the insight to what college life will be like.

Therefore, if a student wishes to appeal result/results the following procedure is to be followed: -

From the Parents in Writing by Noon on Thursday 10th October, 2019 to the school:

A letter stating:

• Examination Number

• Name of Student

• Subject/subjects to be appealed

• Fee (made payable to the school)

Please note a fee of €32.00 per subject must accompany each application.

The Commission will not accept applications directly from candidates, parents or individual teachers.

Pres Seniors get useful workout from South African tourists

Pictured above are the combined Pres and Mauritz Hansen sides after their Senior friendly played in Wilton on Wednesday last.

PBC Seniors got their playing off to a competitive start with a narrow 28-24 loss to visiting South African touring side, Mauritz Hansen Select. Pres used the game to give playing time to 31 players, some of whom were playing Senior rugby for the school for the first time. First half tries from prop Darragh McSweeney and a superb brace from Daniel Hurley had Pres ahead at half time, 19-14.

A superbly created try finished by winger , David McCarthy, put Pres further ahead, 24-14, ten minutes after the restart. The raft of changes in the second half played its part in lessening the cohesion of the Pres side, who were disappointed to concede two late tries inside the last ten minutes, leaving the final score, 28-24, to the visitors.

All in all though, a very worthwhile exercise for our Seniors as they begin their regular season games with a mouth-watering tie against Leinster Senior Cup holders, St. Michaels, this coming Saturday in Wilton, KO 11.30am.

All Ireland Minor Football Cup comes to PRES

The College had the honour this week to welcome 5th Year student, Patrick Campbell, back to the school with the Tom Markham Cup, won on September 8th last by the Cork Minor Football team after a titanic struggle with Galway in the All Ireland Minor Football Final. Patrick was accompanied on the day by his Cork manager, Bobbie O’Dwyer, Cork GAA Director of Football, Conor Counihan, and Cork GAA Games Development Officer, Paudie O’Brien. The group were presented to a large gathering of senior students and staff in the Dan Donovan Theatre, where teacher Enda O’Regan spoke about the huge sacrifices needed to be made to pull off such a magnificent achievement like this, and how it had relevance to all aspects of our lives.

One Act Drama Festival

The Pres Community are delighted to host two One Act Plays, written by past pupil, Derry Cotter, which will be performed in the Dan Donovan Theatre on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th September. Both plays will be performed on each evening, and they promise to be very enjoyable nights out!

Fran Keane - World Rowing Championships

Huge congratulations to Fran Keane and all the team involved in the incredible achievements at the World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria over the last week.

Along with qualifying four boats for the Olympics in Tokyo next year, Ireland came home with two gold medals, a silver and a bronze in Olympic class events.

We in Pres are all extremely proud of Fran who was team manager and part of the coaching team during the Championships. Roll on Tokyo

Patrick to the fore as Cork Minor footballers win the 2019 All Ireland !!

5th Year PBC student, Patrick Campbell played a starring role at centre forward in the Cork Minor footballers dramatic extra time win over Galway in Sunday’s All Ireland Final.

Nemo Rangers clubman, Patrick, has had a magnificent season for Cork, being named Man of the Match after their semi-final win over Mayo, and contributing almost a goal a game to keep the Rebel’s campaign on track this summer.

All in Pres are hugely proud of Patrick’s achievement and we look forward to welcoming him back to the school in the next few days with the Tom Markham Cup.

James Ó Coileáin - International Economics Olympiad

James attended the International Economics Olympiad which was held in St. Petersburg from 24th July until 1st of August this year.

It was a wonderful experience for James. Teams from twenty-four countries competed. There were three components to the competition, financial literacy, economics and a team presentation of a business plan.

James was delighted when he was awarded a bronze medal for his individual performance together with a full tuition scholarship to study Economics at the Higher School of Economics National Research University in the 2020/2021 academic year.

The photograph was taken at the awards ceremony, James was very proud to wear his past pupil's tie!

TY competition - Trip to EU Parliament

The office of Seán Kelly MEP is launching a competition for Transition Year students to win a trip to Brussels to visit the European Parliament. The competition will be held under the European Parliament's "Meet your MEP" programme, and there will be 20 places up for grabs for the trip that will take place in December.

To enter, students are requested to write a short piece (no more than 500 words) on the topic: “How will life be different if/when we achieve gender equality"

The deadline for entries is the 20th of September 2019. Attached is a letter for students. The winners will be chosen and the successful applicants will be announced on or before the 11th October 2019.
