Fran Keane - World Rowing Championships

Huge congratulations to Fran Keane and all the team involved in the incredible achievements at the World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria over the last week.

Along with qualifying four boats for the Olympics in Tokyo next year, Ireland came home with two gold medals, a silver and a bronze in Olympic class events.

We in Pres are all extremely proud of Fran who was team manager and part of the coaching team during the Championships. Roll on Tokyo

Presenting Corn an Darra uí Dhonábhain

Mrs O’Donovan presenting Corn an Darra uí Dhonábhain to our captain Ethan Twomey after the Munster final on 27th Nov 2018.

Mrs O’Donovan’s son Darra was an active sports man in Desmond College, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick who very sadly passed away at a young age.

History of GAA in Pres

According to the recently published 140th Anniversary PBC Book written by Brother JM Feheney, it would appear that the start of organised hurling at PBC was in 1918.

There was some success over the next 10 years but it appears the 1928 Cork Senior Schools Hurling title was the last GAA championship won by PBC. The school continued to field hurling teams but appears to have stopped in the 1930s.

On Gaelic football, the book gives evidence of a Cork Colleges Junior Football Championship 1st round match played in 1946 but no further details on any championship matches.

More Recent History of GAA in Pres

In 1992, the late Ray Kelleher (originally of Dohenys club and later a Blackrock coach) organised a First Year blitz against Christians Brothers College where 3 teams from each school took part.

In 1996, Con Murphy (former president of the GAA) asked Lord Mayor Jim Corr to sponsor a hurling cup to be played for by Pres and CBC in a one day blitz. This Lord Mayor’s Cup later expanded to include other non-GAA schools like Bandon Grammar and Gaelic Football was also added.

Teachers involved in Pres GAA during this time included Damien Philpott, Caleb Sheehan, Enda O’Regan, Micháel Jones, Colmán Ó Tuama, Enda Ronan.

In 2014-2015, the Cork Board took over the Lord Mayor’s Cup competition and all GAA schools were invited to compete plus the previous participating schools.

In January 2016, the PBC u16 Gaelic Football team took to the field in Carrigaline for a Cork Schools match which marked the revival of PBC in a GAA championship.

In September 2016, PBC Senior Football teams took part in Cork and Munster. The PBC Senior Hurling team took part only in Cork. No under 16 teams.

2018 Munster u16½ Hurling Season

While Pres had Senior Football and Hurling teams in the last couple of years, it was felt we could accommodate a younger team in hurling from September 2018 so we entered the 18 team Munster u16½ hurling competition.

We received a bye in the first round and our second round match was against Colaiste an Chroi Naofa, Carrignavar. We came out on the right side of the score and faced into a quarter final against Colaiste An Phiarsaigh, Glanmire. In an epic duel, the teams were level after normal time but Pres prevailed by 1 point after extra time.

Scoil Ruain Killenaule awaited us in the semi final. Originally called off at the last minute, the refixture was a tight match with us 1 point ahead in injury time when we scored a goal to win by 4 points.

A huge day followed when we travelled for the final against Borrisokane Community College. We found ourselves only a goal ahead early in the second half but, driven on by the large group of Pres pupils and parents in the crowd, we made it over the line to win our Munster title sparking joyous scenes.

Conor Morey - sports star of the month

PBC student Conor Morey was awarded Sports Star of the month by the Echo and actually broke 11s for the 100m.

Conor is also competing in the U/18 European championships in Gyor Hungary July 3/9.

He was also part of the U/20 Ireland 4x100 relay team that ran in Mannheim Germany last week , setting a new U/20 National record and getting the Qualification standard for the world U/20 championships . 

Conor will travel with the Ireland team  to compete in the world U/20 Athletics championships in Tampere Finland July 11-15. 

Pres GAA Players with Cork

There was extra interest over the weekend in Cork inter county matches due to the involvement of Pres students with Cork teams.

On Saturday night, Briain Murphy played for Cork u20 footballers in their Munster championship win over Tipperary.

On Sunday, Ethan Twomey and Cian O’Donovan were part of the Cork minor hurlers team that defeated Waterford in their last championship match of the summer.

Ethan and Cian had also played in previous Cork minor matches earlier in their Munster campaign.

All three students played Senior Schools GAA with PBC during the school year.

Second consecutive title for PBC

Congratulations to our Senior boys relay team who won the 4 X 100m relay competition in the All Ireland Schools Outdoor Championships on June 2nd. The team of Conor Morey, Colin Doyle, Daniel Hurley and Andrew Geaney O'Brien took the exciting final in a time of 44.14 seconds. This is the second consecutive year that PBC have taken the title.

Relentless rowers cross the Atlantic

Past pupils and Eoin O’ Farrell and Sean Underwood (Class of 2010) were part of a four man team known as The Relentless Rowers, that included crew mates Pat O’ Connor and Thomas Browne, which took part in the Talisker Atlantic Challenge considered to be the world’s toughest race covering a distance of 3000 miles (4800km) from The Canaries to Antigua.

They finished the race in 6th place out of 25 boats and completed the race in 32 days and 22 hours making them the fastest crew from the republic of Ireland to ever cross the Atlantic. This year was also the fastest ever race with the Relentless crew completing the race over 3 days faster than any other boat in past races.

Both Eoin and Sean started their rowing while here in Pres and both represented the school with distinction at various national competitions during this time in school and both families have had a strong association with the sport in Pres. It was a fantastic achievement for the crew and as past pupils one which the school and the schools rowing department are extremely proud of. Well done!
