Show Racism the Red Card competition - 5th year Art Class

In February this year our teacher Miss Walsh introduced us to ‘Show Racism the Red Card ‘ competition.  This competition challenges young people in schools and youth groups to create a piece of work with an anti racist message.  We had been investigating and discussing the idea of sand sculpture in art class and decided to come up with an idea for the competition which incorporated a sand sculpture.  Having done our research and worked out our idea , we decided to make a video as our entry .

A trip to Fountainstown Beach was organized and this marked the beginning of a number of weeks of creative work, culminating in our ‘Turn the tide on Racism’ video, our most unique work to date.  It was a beautiful sunny day and we built our sculpture and shot our various clips to make our video ( that was my job)

The finished video was the result of many hours of editing and recording voice overs reinforcing our concepts , ‘Turn the tide on Racism’ and ‘Behind the mask we are all the same’ in various languages.

On Tues. 29th. March our class travelled to Dublin to the Aviva Stadium for the Award Ceremony, there was a real sense of excitement and anticipation amongst all the schools and youth groups present, it was an interesting day with q and a panel discussing various issues on racism,  an opportunity to view other entrants work and a tour of the spectacular Aviva stadium. Fortunately for us we were among the few entrants to receive a special commendation Award.  We travelled home to Cork happy and satisfied with our day and proud and privileged to have been presented with this award. We would like to thank Miss Walsh for facilitating our participation in such a fantastic event and Mr. Hegarty who drove us to Dublin.  By Justin Ahern
